MOMBASA COUNTY INTRODUCES RIBA-FREE STAWISHA FUND TO EMPOWER SMALL TRADERS

The County Government of Mombasa has launched the Stawisha Revolving Fund, a new financing initiative aimed at empowering small traders and micro-business owners across the county through riba-free, interest-free loans.

The programme seeks to provide an alternative source of affordable business capital for residents who want to start, expand or strengthen their small businesses without taking conventional interest-bearing loans.

Biashara Mtaani Loan Offers Up to KSh 15,000

The first phase of the Mombasa County Revolving Fund is the Biashara Mtaani programme.

Under this phase, eligible applicants can access an interest-free loan of between KSh 8,000 and KSh 15,000 to support their micro-business activities.

The financing is intended to benefit a wide range of small-scale traders, including young people, women, marginalised communities and other eligible micro-business operators.

Among the businesses targeted include:

  • Mama Karanga and roasted groundnut sellers
  • Viazi karai and bhajia sellers
  • Fruit and fresh juice vendors
  • Barafu vendors
  • Uji and porridge vendors
  • Omena and papa traders
  • Mahindi choma vendors
  • Other eligible micro-enterprises

How the Stawisha Revolving Fund Works

Unlike a business grant, the Stawisha Fund is a revolving fund, meaning beneficiaries are required to repay the money they receive.

Once a beneficiary repays the loan, the funds can then be used to support another eligible trader. This approach is intended to allow the programme to reach more small businesses across Mombasa County over time.

The initiative is expected to provide much-needed working capital to small traders who often struggle to access affordable financing through traditional financial institutions.

Who Can Apply?

The Biashara Mtaani financing targets eligible micro-business operators within Mombasa County, with a focus on supporting groups such as:

Young people • Women • Marginalised communities • Small-scale traders • Micro-business operators

Applicants should meet the programme's eligibility requirements before submitting their applications.

How to Register for the Stawisha Fund

Residents interested in benefiting from the programme can submit their applications online through the official Mombasa County Revolving Fund portal.

Applicants who experience challenges during the online registration process can also seek assistance from ICT officers available in the various sub-counties.

Mombasa County Encourages Small Traders to Take Advantage

The Stawisha Revolving Fund is part of efforts by the Mombasa County Government to expand access to affordable business financing and create opportunities for residents to improve their livelihoods through entrepreneurship.

For many small traders, access to even a modest amount of working capital can help them purchase stock, increase production and grow their daily businesses.

Residents are therefore encouraged to familiarise themselves with the programme's requirements and use the official registration platform when applications are open.

The county's message is clear: through the revolving model, beneficiaries can receive support today while repayments help create opportunities for other traders tomorrow.
